What is the Polish word for cat or pussy-cat? I was told 'meow-cheche'!?

My friend and I went travelling when we were sixteen and lived with Polish people for two months. We would invariably ask them to tell us Polish swear words etc and we also asked them to tell us the words for cat and dog. They told us to say cat like this: (well this is how it sounded) meow-cheche! I thought it was the most lovely word and kind of onomatopoeic. But today I happened to look on the Internet and it said the Polish word for cat is Kot. I now feel stupid and a bit sad. Were they taking the Mickey? Or is there a word for cat in Polish that sounds a bit like that? (Incidentally, the word for dog they told us was like this: var-cheche). If any Polish speakers could shed some light on this I’d be very happy. Thanks

Yeah the words they told you meow-cheche and var-cheche means that the cat "makes meow sound" while the the dog "growls." The actual word for cat is kot (short o sound) and the word for dog is pies (pronounced p-yes.) Most words in polish can also be said in a cute way so kot could have been said kotek and koteczek (which the even cuter, more playful name.) Same thing could be done with pies which could be said piesek and pieseczek. So really what they were telling you was the sound the animals made.





And about the swears 'pee-er doshay troveikko' is pierdole sie chlowieku (pronounced pierre-dole sh-ye chwovyeku), which does mean "go f' youself person (meaning it could be meant for a man or woman." "Koorva" is "kurwa" (pronounced the way u spelled it) and it means whore or the F-word depending on the situation. It is not to be confused with "Krowa" (pronounced Krova) which mean cow lol. The last you mentioned "Boy-ay Bannay" is pojebany (pronounced po-ye-bah(like a sheep)-ny) which pretty much means "f'ed up in the head" or "f'ing crazy."

Reply:Yes, unfortunatly I think they were taking the pee :) It is Kot. Dog is Pies. both words are pronounced nothing like how they told you :) But you know, in different parts of poland they have different words for things. Did you actually live with them in Poland? if so, which part? It could be thier own slang for it. Do you remember the swear words they told you? If so, write them, and I will see if they really were taking the michael :)
Reply:All I can say is that "meow-cheche" when said aloud sounds like a Polish word "miauczycie" which means "you are meowing". (you in plural). And the "var-cheche" sounds like "warczycie" which means "you are growling".


And yes, KOT = cat, KOTEK or KOCIAK = pussycat
