Can I use dog nail polish on a cat?

I have seen a lot of nail polish made specially for dogs, but I have done some yahoo and google searches for cat nail polish, but can't seem to find any.

There is a website that sells dog nail polish for $2 and something, its pretty cheap, the site is www.petedge.com

I have also seen dog nailpolish at a local pet shop.

do you think it would be safe to use dog nail polish on my cats? I don't think it would get stuck in there fur or anything because the website petedge.com says their's is fast drying, and my cats are pretty calm. i was just wondering if i could use it on cats, because i really wouldnt want to use human nail polish on them, im sure it toxic to animals.

thanks.

Cats' claws retract so nail polish really wouldn't be a good idea.

If you're really gung-ho about your cats having colored nails, check out vinyl nail caps (usually marketed under the name of SoftPaws or SoftClaws). They're just little caps that you glue over the cat's existing nail and they fall off every 4-6 weeks or so when the cat sheds the outer sheath of the nail. They're made to alleviate scratching problems because they dull the claw so it can't do damage but they make colored nail caps so you could use those. Just make sure that you don't let your cats outside while they're wearing the nail caps because they dull a cat's first line of defense.

Check out the photo galleries in the links below if you want an idea of what they look like. The websites also have FAQs and information about applying the caps.
Reply:Try using a product called Soft Paws. They are little rubber tips that go over the nails and they come in different colors. Most vets will be able to get them for you and I'm sure most groomers or pet stored also have them. They are safe, last about a month or so and you can see them when the cats claws are retracted.
Reply:Why would you want to? I mean, really? Their claws retract, so even a fast-drying polish is likely to end up on pawpads or fur. And when they groom, they'll be eating that, plus whatever chips off.

They're beautiful without our silly human vanities, you know? Paint your own nails and leave the kitties' alone.
Reply:Are they calm if you touch their feet? My cats FREAK OUT if I touch their feet.
Reply:Probably not a good idea, as cats lick everything off their paws. I am sure it's not meant to be ingested.

Plus, thier nails retract, so it's kind of pointless.
Reply:Here's what you have to keep in mind, trust me, I have tried painting my cats nails.

Cats claws are retractible, meaning they can go "into" the paw and 'hide" This means you would have to press on the paw to make the claws stick out, paint them, AND hold tahe cat's paw in the "Claws out" position until the polish is dry. MUCH harder than it seems. Even a good natured cat won't appreciate it's paws being held and squeesed (however gently) for that long, and will probably fight you.

You can go ahead and try, but it may not work too well.
Reply:I would say that it is better not to try it. Cats react differently to substances than dogs do. They can't use the same flea and tick medications because advantage is lethal to cats. To be on the safe side I would leave the nail polish for the dogs. Plus cats claws retract into the skin and dogs do not so unless you hold your cat's paw until the polish is dry it will come off as soon as you let go of the paw and the claws are retracted.
