Dark nail polish on short or long nails?

i've been growing my nails - doing quite well - filing them for a square look at the top.

but...when i put black nail polish on they looked awful!!

i'm not keen on light nail polish - pinks and apricots, but i like the natural french polished look on long nails - why is this?

i've shortened them by half now and it looks much better.

Dark nail polish on short or long nails?
I think the dark polish makes the long nail look too much like a claw...something a halloween witch costume would need! Maybe it's just perception or possibly the women we see wearing dark polish on long nails..not very classy, in general, are they? I think it can make a mental image without us even knowing it.

But for me, I just like the look better...I prefer the shorter nail, squared off and then painted with either a very sheer light colour or with a dark colour. More elegant.

Besides, long nails can be difficult to manage.

Have you seen the new Navy Blue colour in nail polish? I'd heard recently black polish was out and had been replaced with the Navy (very dark) Blue. Almost looks black. It's very nice.
Reply:I would say long
Reply:Go for a dark red like rimmell's "desire" or some dark purple colours rimmell do saome great one's and they aren't expensive. Black will always look gross.
Reply:I agree, I think black nail polish looks much better on short nails and french manicure suits long nails!

This could be because black nail polish is high maintenance so in order to look good has to be applied to short, neat nails rather than long witchy nails!

Black nail polish looks so good because it goes with everything which is why I think it looks hot on anyone and why I love it! :) But I also love a good french manicure when I'm feeling girly! lol :)
Reply:Black nail polish is just wrong unless you want to look like some emo kid. Try red or dark pink.
Reply:dark nail polish makes your nails look shorter.

so put it on long nails.

or get a french mani.

in my humble opinion, those are two of the best looks for nails.
Reply:if you have long dark nails it could lookk gothic or trashy.

i loveeee dark nail polish but i make sure my nails are short and squared when i use it. wicked by essie is my favorite color and dior vernis is a gorgeous shade of midnight blue.
Reply:dosnt matter dark nail polish is hot go for it.
Reply:mine are dark red at the moment. Not very long not very short.

they look nice actually. black is not so easy to use. although i did a few times.

Don't use those acrylic nail polishes. They don't work well.

Mavala for example is very good.

The nails shouldn't be very long for black nail polish, it is not nice. You should keep them middle length. cut them squarrish.

Reply:french tips do look better on long nail because there is actually a 'tip' to put it on, but i have slim finger and long nails and i love to wear black nail polish, i don't think it looks bad at all, but i will admit when your nails are slightly shorter it is better.

ps: i like dark nail polish but i must admit it looks stranger on long nail, i don't know why, but it is not a mind thing. lol
Reply:Black nail varnish looks awful on long nails, they should be short cause then it looks hot and choppy and cool.

A french manicure looks good on medium length to long nails, those tip things make your natural nail look tiny and odd shaped, especially on your thumb!

Just an opinion
Reply:cut them thats better lol
Reply:I love putting black nail polish on my nails when they're long, and my friends put black nail polish on short nails. But I personally prefer black on long nails as it can make fingers seem stubby if you have short nails.

Hope this helps!
