Polish Recipes?

My husband is part Polish and I would like to surprise him with some authentic Polish dishes. I do need to keep the cost down, so something simple and not too expensive...Thanks.

I like to make polish sausage and with it I serve a cabbage dish, I cant remember the name if it, but here is how i make it.


I chop one head of cabbage into bite size pieces. I cook until soft in a stick of butter and a couple of chopped up bacon slices. While that is cooking I make a pasta recipe. Just look in any cookbook. Its basically flour, eggs a little oil and water and salt. Drop small pieces of the dough in boiling salted water. After they float to the top, wait about one min and remove with slotted spoon. Add this to the cooked cabbage and mix it all in. Add salt and pepper. Serve this with the sausage.

Reply:I am part Polish as well and my favorite polish dish takes a bit of work but definitely keeps the cost down while keeping you full. They are called pirogis. You take dough roll it into about seven inches in diameter put mashed potatoes in the center then fold the dough over into a half moon shape. Pinch the sides closed and then boil them until they surface. You can put bacon, sauerkraut, cheese, sausage or any number of things mixed in with the potatoes. They are sooo yummy.

1 (16-ounce) package kielbasa sausage, cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices


2 (15-ounce) cans kidney beans, undrained


2 (14 1/2-ounce) cans chicken broth


1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce


1 (14 1/2-ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained


1 (24-ounce) jar picante sauce


2 (4.5-ounce) cans sliced mushrooms, drained


1 small head cabbage, shredded


1 medium onion, chopped


1 green bell pepper, chopped


1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder





Brown sausage in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat; drain on paper towels, and wipe Dutch oven clean with a paper towel. Return sausage to Dutch oven; add beans and remaining ingredients.





Bring to a boil; reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes.





Yield: 20 cups
Reply:I agree with Hippy and TheGeneral - I'm part polish, and those are exactly what my grandmother would cook. Don't forget the Rye bread - we always had that with her meals.
